In one of the editorials almost two decades back, The Economist had commented, "India is a country of a billion people and a nuclear arsenal in its backyard; but in the international arena it counts for nothing " It went on to illustrate that while India counted for one seventh of the global population, its share of the international trade was below a per cent and in terms of its per capita ranking India would be near the bottom end of the list. Two decades down the line, the situation has not changed much
