520 _aRaising the concern for quality teachers in this noble occupation, authors tried to frame the status of teacher education in India. A Gazette of Norms brought out by The National Council for Teacher Education recently, on November 28, 2014 is reviewed. Pointing out the need of modernizing teacher education in India, authors also reflected upon Indian education policies and curriculum frameworks. It is high time for education to realize its identity. Looking into quality concerns, the need of manpower planning; dedicated, specialized and multi-mode teacher education programmes; and inclusion of innovative and capacity building courses in teacher education is discussed. Accepting the importance of ICT in education, authors suggested to avail help from computer networks like INFLIBNET. Emphasizing the renewal of teacher education courses, many valuable suggestions and recommendations are given in a form of thorough discussion on courses proposed to be introducing in teacher education; with the lists of objectives and model units to be included in each course.
