Abstract: The hides and skins of wild and domesticated animals have always been treated in some w~ to serve human beings as clothing. Leather is obtained if the treatment removes the hair and makes the hide or skin resistant to disintegration and above all to putrefaction in hot and humid environments. Such treatment is called tanning.
