Entrepreneurship as a field of research study has started gaining importance in recent years. The academic field of entrepreneurship has expanded significantly since the 1990s and the number of researchers and journals specializing in this relatively new discipline is now substantial. This paper presents a critical study of the trends in the growth and development of entrepreneurship research in Indian Universities for the last sixteen years. It reveals the number and percentage of Doctoral Dissertation (PhD) programmes in entrepreneurship carried out in various Indian universities in comparison to that of Social Sciences. The distribution of research in entrepreneurship, university wise, gender wise and language wise has been examined. Implications on the status of research in entrepreneurship in Indian universities are also drawn. A few suggestions are given to foster research and doctoral education in the field of Entrepreneurship.
