Abstract: The success of a firm heavily depends upon the way it is managed to achieve the objectives. Entrepreneur, a person behind the creation of a firm, not only gives birth to it but also manages the firm in an effective manner to become a success in the industry. Perhaps the entrepreneur does seek profits; but that he has other motivational drives influencing his behaviour patterns must also be recognised. Therefore, to understand adequately the role of the entrepreneur, economic and psychological factors must be considered. This study has adopted the concept of the classification of entrepreneurs into Entrepreneurs, Macro entrepreneurs and Micro entrepreneurs (Carland & Carland, 1997) to study the entrepreneurial role in export oriented garment units in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, India in view of the fact that there exist both high growth-oriented entrepreneurs and stability-based or income-focused entrepreneurs. The study proved the existence of three categories of Entrepreneurs i.e., Macro Entrepreneurs, Micro Entrepreneurs and Entrepreneurs in Export Oriented Garment market at Tirupur and that the psychological determinants like Achievement motivation, Innovation and Risk-taking have considerable influence in determining the category of the entrepreneurs, apart from disproving that market performance can form the basis for categorisation of entrepreneurs into Macro entrepreneur, Micro entrepreneur and Entrepreneur groups. This study has identified the weightage for each factor by which further categorisation of more samples can be done provided the same type of questionnaire is made use of.
