Abstract: CARE-India's CREDIT (Credit Rotation for Empowerment and Development through Institution Building and Training) Project is designed to address the fundamental problem of 10Yl' income of poor, rural women and their limited control of that income. Implemented since 1997 April in partnership with local NGOs (NBJK, PRADAN & KSRA), CREDIT project endeavours to provide women with sustained access to credit and increase women's active participation in financial decisions of the family. Over a five-year period, the CREDIT Project in Bihar targets 6500 poor women from predominantly tribal regions (in Ranchi and Lohardaga districts) The CREDIT project is supported by the World Food Program (WFP) project generated funds through the Department of Forest, Government of Bihar and the Joint Funding Scheme of Department for International Development (DFID), United Kingdom and Rotary Foundation. The final goal of this project is to increase the contribution of 80% of women members to family income by 50% and significantly increase their participation in family decision making process on a sustainable basis.
