dc.description.abstract The paper is aimed to find out the status of Prime Ministers Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), a scheme launched by Govt. of India for promoting self-employment with special reference to Jammu & Kashmir. A sample of 102 beneficiaries whose projects have been financed under this scheme were identified for this study. The results revealed that high degree of desirability is reflected in the self employed sector vis-à-vis other types of employment such as waged and salaried employment. The results further depicted that the credit linked subsidy scheme (PMEGP) acts as an important source of finance for the entrepreneurs. However, so far irrational approach is being adopted while financing the projects under this scheme and the clearance process for the projects takes much time which results de-motivation and loss of dynamism among the prospective entrepreneurs. The study further revealed that whole process needs to be restructured for effective implementation of this scheme. en_US
