dc.description.abstract | During the last 30 years the possibilities of infusion therapy have been increasingly recognised and the therapy has thus been developed to its present standard. There are four main ranges of application of highly specialised intravenous infusion solutions: a) Treatment of disturbed water and electrolyte metabolism, especially in severe cases. b) Therapy of acid-base imbalances. c) Volume substitution and volume replacement in surgery of in accident victims suffering blood loss. d) Parenteral nutrition for severely ill and postoperative patients. Infusion therapy supports the restoration and maintenance of physiological conditions of patients, referred to as "homeostasis". | en_US |
