Abstract:
It has become evident that if at all the development process is to be accelerated; the potential contribution by half the population cannot be ignored. It has been noticed, throughout various communities, that the interest and problems of women are homogenous. Of late it has been realized that women’s issues and development issues needs to be linked. Economic development and gender equality go hand in hand. Over a period of time the role of women has been recognized in the development mainstream. Since women are integral part of the industrialized society, it is now believed that women must work using her acquired skill to supplement income for the family. Now they are expected to pick up self-employment opportunities rather than waiting for employment in organized sector. Trends and evidences show that, during the present times, the informal sector is increasingly becoming provider of employment and self-employment to women. It works as parking lot for those women who are otherwise unable to find a gainful employment in the formal sector. In view of this, the present paper examines the women entrepreneurship in the informal sector in the India.
