However, the importance of the status or women has now been recognised as an important aspect of national development. Women in the traditional societies of Asia and Africa take part with men in producing food stuffs, in addition to endless household work, yet their works are not given due importance. Women have also been denied equal opportunities for their-personal growth and social development in the whole world hut in India the position of women is still worse because of segregated character of the society, the condition of poverty and traditional value system (De Souza: 1975). Efforts are going on at various levels to change the situation, hut the goal seems to be distant, it is more so in case of rural social system. The position of rural women in comparison to their urban counterpart continues to be low.
